Why I loathe mosquitos

EIley went for the afternoon to her grandparents cottage, which is on a beautiful river with tons of trees. After the torrential rain we have been having it, like every other inch of manitoba, is a mosquito breeding ground.

She came home with over 100 bites, even though she was covered with citronella, all natural child-safe repellent gel. I thought I was doing her a favor by not spraying DEET poison on her, but now I am not so sure.

She was so miserable, clawing at the terrible bites for the last 3 days. I lay in bed last night wondering if there was anything redeeming about mosquitos. Do they add anything to creation that is needed? can anyone help me out here? I am beginning to wonder if those blood-sucking beasts came with the fall of man and will be a primary resident in hell.

Anyhow, my dear husband made up an oatmeal conncoction that was vital to his survival the two years he tree-planted in the northern canada mosquito outback. He applied the pack to eiley and there was a bit of relief. I would welcome any suggestions for keeping these vermin away from my baby, or any recipes for soothing relief after they leave their mark.

I've heard that if you carry around a Boucne dryer sheet in your back pocket as well as take a fresh dryer sheet and rub it on you or your clothing that the bugs will NOT come near! not to sure if it works as well as they say, but I've been told it does. Doesn't hurt to give it a try.

I hope she is feeling better, poor baby!

Poor thing! I feel her pain, ouch! I have very attractive blood for mosquitos, so end up having to use the deet repellents, but I've found that the mildest one (least stink) is the Watkins cream repellant... and it works great. You can get it from a Watkins dealer or at Tourond Superette.

svea -- when shiloh got some bites a couple weeks ago it took over a week for them to calm down and go away. the last couple days i have been applying calamin lotion and they are nearly gone!!! they are still there but significantly decreased.

what i did was put colodial silver on the bites and then the calamin lotion.

ps what i like about cream mos replellant is it is easier to put on the bodies of little ones. the spray is easier to get in their eyes and the lotion makes it easy to slather on their arms and necks and faces....

love you

thanks everyone for the sympathy and ideas. I will have to talk to ruth about the watkins creme repellent. They are starting to fade a bit, but of course one trip outside and there are lots of new ones...grrrrr to those beasts!

Oh honey, that is so brutal! Have you tried benadryl to help the itching (and hopefully help her sleep?) We have to use that all the time b/c Kezi has such bad allergies to things. Her photos make me feel so bad for you BOTH. Also have you tried giving her an icepack she can rub on her bites? That helps settle Luke down... I wish I knew something brilliant!

How many days till baby two? I am thinking about you all the time!

Those blood suckers are evil!! I agree! I once did a camp exercise where everyone held a part of a string and to represent creation and the person representing the mosquito started to wiggle the string and when we felt the wiggle we wiggled too. It ended up that we all were shaking at the end to prove how important every bit of creation is. I think they were liars! I agree that they must have come with the Fall! Especially after witnessing the affects of that deadly little parasite they carry; Malaria!
benadryl is very helpful!! But I am also one of those moms who resorts to Deet. :)

Poor girl!! I don't know how to relieve the itch, except maybe calamine lotion. For preventing bites, I have heard that the Avon Skin-so soft lotions/soaps keep away mosquitos.

I'm with Ruth, the Watkins lotion is the best. I have often wondered what is worse, the DEET or the actual bites?? I'm siding with the bites are worse and therefore I'm using DEET on all 3 of my kids especially since they found a mosquito infected with West Nile in one of the Niverville traps...can't be a good thing!

Thanks for playing alongin the Solarveil Sling Give-Away Contest! Good Luck.

Oh my goodness! I thought we had it bad down here in the humid south with all of our mosquitoes!! My kids can't even go outside! I got some good ideas form reading your comments. When my baby gets bites he scratches them ALOT, so I put anti-biotic ointment on them and band-aids...now I know you cna't do that b/c you ahve so darn many! Last year he had several get infected and they were pussy and flashing red and white colors and stuff. I had never seen mosquito bites do that. They are aweful!

I TOTALLY agree that mosquitos had to be a result of The Fall (along with roaches!)....and is the very reason I plan on NEVER returning to Rovenami again!!-Jenn Beamer
